Our research study "Airways Infection in Bronchiectasis", funded by the NIHR Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre, has now successfully recruited all 50 participants in under 12 months.
The research study aims to explore the feasibility of collecting and analysing samples to investigate the microbiological causes of exacerbations (worsening of sysmptoms) in patients with bronchiectasis.
The research is important as selection of antibiotics is often empirical (based upon experience), and the care of these patients would be improved with better understanding of the microbiological organisms and biomarkers (a naturally occurring molecule, gene, or characteristic by which a particular pathological or physiological process, disease, etc. can be identified) that cause these infections, to help guide clinical decisions.
